About:
Born with a powerhouse voice, Laurie Cairns began singing at eight years of age when she joined the church choir in her hometown of Aurora, Illinois. As she grew older, she became aware of different styles of music.
"The first time I heard Barbara Streisands voice, I was in awe. I had never heard anything like that. It was then that I knew that music could touch the soul."
In high school, Cairns began listening to 60s rock and 70s funk, which became part of her own sound. Soon, "The Laurie Cairns Band" was born and performing throughout the Chicagoland area. She later became lead vocalist for groups such as Counterpoint, bliss and Cobalt and performed at many clubs in Chicago including the Cue Club, The Beat Kitchen and Schubas. During this time Cairns showcased her versatility through interpretations of Patsy Clines Crazy and Melissa Etheridges Bring Me Some Water and gave Muddy Waters a run for his money on her rendition of Hoochie Coochie Man.
Motivated by other women performers, Cairns is moved by the pain in Etta James voice, loves Patti Griffins folk rock and is inspired by Carol Kings storytelling.
"I have such an eclectic taste in music, but one constant is my interest in the human experience."
Now working on a solo career Cairns is recording her own music. She writes about finding love on her terms and accepting change, letting love in and knowing when to let go. Songs such as As I Am and You Dont Know open her heart up to the audience and leave her vulnerable to scrutiny.
"Everyone has their own heartbreak and their own joy. I feel fortunate that I am able to share mine through my music."
Cairns would love to one day work with producers such as Glen Ballard and Robert John "Mutt" Lange. "Music for me has always been about following my heart and doing what I love. It is a passion that I will forever pursue." Cairns manages to say it best with her own lyrics..."Sweet , sweet morning. Mornings on its way."
